How to Install Jetpack
A self-hosted blog with WordPress.org offers the flexibility to customize your site in nearly any way you desire, thanks to a wide range of plugins. However, to fully utilize plugins and other features, you often need to install and maintain multiple individual plugins. The popular Jetpack plugin for WordPress aims to streamline this process by consolidating all these features into a single, user-friendly plugin that can be installed and managed just as easily as any other individual plugin.
The Jetpack plugin offers a quick and convenient way to enhance your self-hosted WordPress blog by adding a wide array of invaluable features. Some of the key features of the plugin include a sidebar image widget, automatic social media posting, email subscriptions, recent Tweets, statistics and analytics, social media commenting, and much more.
Installing Jetpack is similar to installing any other plugin. You’ll need to have a self-hosted WordPress website running version 3.8 or later, and you will also need a free account at WordPress.com (which is different from your blog account), as the plugin utilizes resources from the WordPress.com cloud.
First, we'll go through the installation process for Jetpack, and future installments will cover how to set up its various features.
How to Install Jetpack
You can install Jetpack from within the WordPress plugin directory through your administrator dashboard or manually by uploading the extracted files to your FTP server. However, the former method is by far the easiest, as outlined below:
1. Log into your WordPress administrator dashboard and click on “Plugins” from the left menu.
2. Click “Add New” and enter “Jetpack” into the search box. The first result should be “Jetpack by WordPress.com.”
3. Click on “Install Now” beneath the plugin title and confirm by clicking “OK.” Wait a moment for the plugin to download, unpack, and install.
4. Click the “Activate Plugin” link. The plugin will be activated, and you will return to the Plugins page.
Jetpack requires you to connect it to a WordPress.com account to take advantage of its integrated cloud features. A WordPress.com account is distinct from the account you created for your blog. If you don’t have a WordPress.com account, you can create one [here](https://wordpress.com/start).
Once you have your WordPress.com account set up, you can start the connection process for Jetpack:
1. Back on the Plugins page, click “Connect to WordPress.com” in the green bar at the top.
2. Enter your WordPress.com username and password on the next page, then click “Authorize Jetpack.” Jetpack should now be ready to use.
Congratulations! Jetpack is now configured and ready for use. Be sure to keep Jetpack updated, as new versions are released regularly. When updates for plugins are available, the number of updates will be displayed on the “Plugins” button in the administrator dashboard. To update Jetpack in the future, follow these steps:
1. Open the Plugins page in the administrator dashboard and scroll down to find the “Jetpack by WordPress.com” plugin.
2. If an update is available, an alert will appear beneath the plugin. Click the “update now” link to download and install the latest version automatically.
